The Lion and the Mouse

Al Asad Wal Faar

Exercise 1:

Paragraph - 1


Kaana faarun sagheerun yaéeshu qareeban minal ghaabah, wa zaatha yawmin kharajal-faaru min baithihi, wa akhaza maáhu shabakathan sagheerathan. Masha al-faaru nahwal-ghaabah liyasthaada al-farashaah al-jameelah.

There was a small mouse who lived close to the forest, on that day it went out of its house and took with it a small net. The mouse walked towards the forest to hunt for beautiful butterflies.


Paragraph - 2

Shaahada al-faaru Farashathan jameelah, Kaanath faraa-shah mulawwanah bil ahmar wal asfar wal akhdar, jaraa al-faaru khalfahaa, waqafath al-faraashaathu al-jameelathu fee az-zill, waqafath alaa shai-in kabeer launuhoo bun-nee, lam yaárifu al-faaru , kaana haazaa ash-shai asadan kabeeran.

The mouse saw a beautiful butterfly, the butterfly was colourful with red, yellow and green colour, the mouse ran behind the butterfly, the beautiful butterfly stopped in the shade, it stopped on a thing that was huge and brown in colour, the mouse did not know what it was, it was a huge Lion.


Paragraph - 3

Sa-ida al-faaru ilaa al-faraashah wa darabahaa bi-kulli quwwathihee, darabahaa bish-shabakah, thaarath al-faraashah baéedan, walam yumsiku bihaa al-faaru, wa wa waqaáth ash-shabakathu alaa anfi al-asad. Ghadiba al-asadu .....wa za-a-ra bi sawthihee al-qawiyy.



The mouse climbed to reach the butterfly and hit at the butterfly with all its might, hit it with the net, the butterfly flew far away, the mouse could not catch it, and the net fell on Lion’s nose. The lion got angry……….. And it roared with its mighty voice.


Paragraph - 4


Amsaka al-Asad bil faaris-sagheeri min raqabathihi, wa rafaáhu fil hawaai wa qaala: Kaifa tadribunee alaa anfee? Mān Anta li-thafála zaalik ?!
Faqaala al-faar: Aiyuhal asadu al-azeem.....ithruknee Azhabu... Anaa sagheerun was daéefun wa Inshaa Allah sa-usaaíduka fee yawmin Minal ay-yaam.


The lion caught the tiny mouse from its neck and raised it in the air and said: “ How could you hit me on my nose? Who are you to do such a thing?” Then the mouse replied “O great Lion,.......Leave me to go…… I'm small and weak. And if God Wills I shall help you someday.


Paragraph - 5

Dahika al-asadu indamaa samia kalaam al-faari wa qaala: Anta thusaaidunee !? Kaifa usaaidunee faarun sagheerun daéefun mislaka wa anaa malikul-haiwaanaathi ?! Izhab....Izhab aiyuhal faar. Wa wadaá al-asadu al-faara alal-Ardh fa-jaraa baéedan.


The lion laughed when it heard the words of the mouse and said: “You will help me? How will you help me - A tiny weak mouse like you and I am the king of Animals?! Go, Go O mouse. And (the Lion) put the mouse on the ground and the mouse ran far away.


Paragraph - 6

Báda ayyaam waqaá al-asadu fee shabakatin kabeeratin, haawalath al-asadu al-khurooja, walam yaqdir.Shadda ash-shabakatha bi-yadihi al-qawiyyathi falam yaqdir, Adda Ash-shabakatha bi-asnaanihee al-kabeerathi falam yaqdir, qaala al-asadu: Alaana yahduru as-sayyaadoon wa yumsikoonanee!

After several days the lion fell into a large net, it tried to get out but could not manage. It tried hard to pull (the net) with it's huge arm but could not manage. It tried to bite the net with it's large teeth but could not manage. The Lion said, “Now the hunters will come and catch me”.


Paragraph - 7

Saa-ha al-asadu bil-haiwaanaath: An-najdah.... an-najdah !
Samiáthul-feelul-Kabeeru.....wajaraa.
Wa-samiáthul-namirul-qawiyyu.....wajaraa.
Wa-samiáthuz-zaraafathuth-thaweelu.....wajarath
Wa-samiáthun-naáamathus-sareeáthu.....wajarath.

The lion called the animals: help….. help!!
The big elephant heard ……. and ran away.
And the strong tiger heard …... and ran away.
And the tall giraffe heard ….. and ran away.

And the fast ostrich heard ….. and ran away.


Paragraph - 8

Samiá al-faaru al-asada yazaru,
samiá al-faaru sawthahu al-qawiyy. Jaraa al-faaru nahwal-asadi, qaala al-faaru: Ayyuhal asadu, sa-akhrajuka bi-suráthin InshaaAllah......asnaanee haaddah, Hal thazakkur indamaa dahiktha minnee? Al-aana sa-tharifu maazaa yafalu al-faaru as-sagheeru liyusaa-idaka.


The mouse heard the lion roaring, the mouse heard the strong voice (of the lion). The mouse rushed toward the lion, the mouse said, “O lion I will free you fast if God Wills….. my teeth are sharp, do you remember that you had once laughed at me? Shortly you will know what a small mouse can do to help you.


Paragraph - 9

Bada-a al-faaru amalahu bi-sur-áh, qathaá al-faaru hablash-shabakathi bi-asnaanihee ....qathaá....waqathaá....waqathaá.....ámila al-faaru fatḥ-hathan kabeeratan....wa kharaja al-asadu minal-fath-hah. Al-aanal-asadu fee salaam.

The mouse immediately started its work, the mouse cut the rope of the net with its teeth…. It cut….. And it cut…… And it cut. The mouse made a big opening. And the lion came out through the opening. Now the lion was safe.


Paragraph - 10

Qaala al-asadu: Aáraftu al-aana kalaamaka. Harabath kullul-haiwaanaathi wa waqaftha antha, wa anqazathnee.... Shukran yaa Sadeeqee. Wa min zaalika al-yawm.... Asbaha al-asadu Sadeeqal-faar, wa asbaha al-faaru Sadeeq Al-Asad.
The lion said, “Now I understand what you said. All the animals fled but you stood and released me….. Thank you, my friend. And from that day, the lion became the friend of the mouse, and the mouse became Lion's friend.

ذات ( يوم ): في يوم من الأيام . ذات يوم سأزور جدّي في القرية .



13New word ( ذات ) : Its meaning and using it in a sentence
Arabicذات ( يوم ): في يوم من الأيام
Read asZaata (yawm): Fee yawm minal ayyaam.
MeaningThat (day):That particular day .
Sentence using the above new word
Arabicذات يوم سأزور جدّي في القرية .
Read asZaatha yawm sa-azooru jaddi fil qaryah.
MeaningThat day I will visit my grandfather in the village.








14New word ( قوة ) : Its meaning and using it in a sentence
Arabicقوة : لن يحمل أخي هذه الحقيبة اثقيلة،
فذلك يحتاج إلى قوة كبيرة.
Read asQuwwah: Lan yahmilu akhee haazihee al-haqeebah saqeelan
Fa zaalika yahtaaju ilaa quwwah kabeerah
MeaningStrength: My brother will not carry this bag so heavy,
it takes a lot of power.




Exercise 3

Circle the best answer from between "Yes, No and I don't Know":


1) Answer -Yes - نعم Read as: Kaana al-asadu ynaam fee zill, Fa-lam yu-shaahid faaru al-asad. Meaning: The lion was sleeping in the shade, so the mouse did not see the lion.


2) Answer - No - لا Read as: Adda al-faaru zael al-asad fa ghadibath al-asad. Meaning : The mouse bit the tail of the lion and the lion got angry.


3) Answer - No - لا
Read as: Kaana habl al-shabakah daéefan, Fa qathaáhu al-faaru bi sur-áh.

Meaning:  The rope of the net was weak, and the mouse cut it quickly.


4) Answer - I Don't know - لا أعرف
Read as: Allazee wadaá al-shabakah, Sayyaadun  yaskunu al-qaryatha al-qareebah.

Meaning : The hunter who laid the net was from a nearby village.


5) Answer - Yes - نعم
Read as: Anqaza al-faarul Asad, Fa asbaha  al-asadu Sadeeq al-faar.

Meaning : The mouse liberated the lion, and the lion became friend of the mouse.



Exercise 4.1 Fill in the blanks:

أمسك الأسد الفأر من رقبته و  رفعه في الهواء.

The lion caught the mouse with its teeth and raised it into the air.





Exercise 4.2
تعرف من هذه القصة :
We know from this story :

a)
كيف يصطاد الصيادون الأسد .( ✓ )

Kaifa yasthaadu as-sayyaadoon as-Asad.

How the hunters hunt the lion.

(This is the correct answer)


b)

كيف يصنع الصيادون الشبكة القويّة.

Kaifa yasnau as-sayyaadoon As-Shabakah al-qawiyy.

How hunters made a strong net.



Exercise 4.3

هذه القصة تقول:

Haazihi al-qissa thaqool:

The story tells us:

1)

لا تضرب الأسد على أنفه.

Laa thadribu al-asad alaa anfihi.

Don’t hit the lion on its nose.

2)

أسنان الأسد أقوى من أسنان الفأر.

Asnaan al-asad aqwaa min asnaan al-faar.

The teeth of the lion are stronger than the mouse.

3)

الكبير هو الذي يساعد الصغير فقط .

Al-kabeer huwa al-lazee yusaaidu as-sagheer faqath.

The big ones are always the ones that help the small.

4)

الذي يساعد الناس يساعده الناس ( ✓ )  .

Allazee yusaaidu an-naas yusaaiduhu an-naas.

The one who helps people, people help him.(This is the answer)



Exercise 4.4 - نعم / لا - True or false?

ترك الأسد الفأر يذهب ولم يقتله.

فهو يعرف ما سيفعله الفأر،

عندما يقع الأسد في شبكة الصياد.


Tharaka al-asad al-faar yazhabu wa lam yaqthuluhu, Fahuwa yaa’rifu maa sa-yafaluhu al-faar indamaa yaqaa’ al-asad fee shabakathis-sayyaad.


The lion left the mouse and did not kill him.

He knew what the mouse will do, when he (the lion) falls into the hunter's net. Answer  is False -   لا



Exercise 4.5

في الفقرة رقم (4) كلمة معناها: "بعيد عن الخطر".

In paragraph (4) there is a word that means "far from danger".

Answer is    في سلام




Exercise 5:
Combines the sentences as shown in the example:


1)

Question:


مشى الفأر حول الغابة.

Mashee al-faar hawl al- ghaabah.

The mouse walked around the forest.

يصطاد الفأر الفراشات.
Yastaadu al-faar al-faraashaath.

The mouse catches the butterflies.

Answer:

مشى الفأر نحو الغابة ليصطاد الفراشات.
Mashee al-faar nahwal- ghaabah Liyastaadu al-faraashaath.

The mouse walked around the forest to catch butterflies.


Chapter 6
Exercise 6
New Method of forming sentences:
1)
سمع الفار الأسد يزأر .
Samiá al-faaru al-asada yazaru.
The mouse heard the lion roaring.

2)
شاهد التلاميذ السيارة يسرع
Shaahada ath-thalaameezu as-sayyaaratha thasraú.

The students saw the car go fast.

3)
ترك الراعي الأغنامَ ترعي

Tharaka ar-raee al-aghnaama tharee.

The Shepherd left the sheep grazing


4)
رأي المعلم التلميذَ يكتب

Ra-aa al-Muallimu at-thalmeezu yakthubu

The teacher saw the student Writing.

5)
وجد الأولاد الأمّ تطبخ

Wajada Al-awlaadu al-umma thathbukhu


The children found the mother cooking.

6)
صور الرجل النمرَ يقفز

Sawwara  ar-rajulu an-nimra yaqfizu.

The man photographed the jumping tiger.
